Are you nuts?!?!? If you have an antique car and it does NOT have safety glass, order new laminated safety glass, take the old glass out, and put it in your recycle bin and then smash it so no one else is tempted to ever use it. I have replaced ALL the glass on every antique I own. (1914 Model T, 1929 Model A, 1925 Studebaker, 1926 Franklin, 1917 REO.) I have also replaced all the glass on several cars owned by other people. If I do a restoration, the glass is the first thing to be removed and smashed. Old car glass doesn't break like new car glass. It leaves jagged shards in the frame. Even when Ford started to use their own safety glass in the 1920's, it wasn't very good. Glass is pretty cheap, considering. Flat glass for an antique car is easy to find, and doesn't cost a lot. Look in Hemming's Motor News for a supplier. A lot of the larger suppliers advertise that they have thousands of different patterns available. You may even be able to take it somewhere locally and get a piece fitted to the window frame. Curved glass is different. It is harder to find and more expensive. But there are still many places manufacturing curved windshields for cars of the 40's and 50's. I wouldn't want a child or grandchild of mine to ride in a car without safety glass! If you like your car, and you plan to drive it, get the glass replaced. |
